Dirk Joseph
Teaching Artist - Set Design
I am Dirk Joseph, a visual artist and performer. I have been teaching art in public schools and community settings for over 3 decades, starting in New York and for the last 20 years in Baltimore.
I see art as a connective cultural technology. It is medicine, ritual, magic. Though I use the materials to produce physical and digital art, the ultimate art is the experience of being created by the act of creating or observing, and so I am passionate about facilitating creative workshops for children and adults. I am interested in using art to explore ideas of connectedness and distance, sovereignty and slavery, and what it means to be a conglomerate of nature’s forces in this human form. This inner exploration is also what I aim to bring to my art instruction, and community art activity. I have also been exploring how collaborative art making can be used to cultivate community.
"I make art to record experiences and dreams.
I make art to create experiences and dreams."
